AZ Family
In honor of National Mentoring Month, our Program and Community Engagement Director, Marvin Scott, joined Jamie Cerreta on AZ Family to share how Rosie’s House is using music as a vehicle for mentorship and life lessons.
“In order to accomplish playing an instrument, you have to dedicate the time and focus, and activate those memory and cognitive connections,” Marvin shared during the broadcast. He highlighted how our mission works to eliminate barriers to high-quality music education, ensuring every child has the opportunity to build these critical skills.
The Power of Peer Mentorship
Marvin highlighted the Musicians Mentoring in the Classroom (MMC), a unique initiative where students in grades 9-12 serve as mentors to our youngest musicians in the Early Childhood program. This creates a cycle of success:
- For the younger students: They gain a role model who helps them navigate their musical journey.
- For the teen mentors: They build empathy, leadership skills, and a deeper connection to their community.
The interview also spotlighted the success of Rosie’s House alumnus, Alan. Once a student mentor himself, Alan credited his time at Rosie’s House and the mentorship he received for his academic success. Today, he is attending ASU to study guitar on a full scholarship.
